Facts about the breed

The Shih Tzu breed originated in China, but scholars disagree on exactly how it came about. Some believe it is one of the oldest dog breeds in existence, dating back 8,000 years BC. At the same time, there is evidence that the breed belonged to a group of “sacred dogs” or “lion dogs”. It was therefore considered a good luck charm and was a central creature in Tibetan Buddhism. In fact, shih tzu translates to “little lion”, which can be a bit confusing considering that it does not bear many similarities to the king of the jungle. Shih tzu dogs are generally very affectionate, small and fluffy.

Shih Tzus, like other short-nosed breeds, are sensitive to heat and can have breathing problems when it gets too hot. Make sure to protect them from strong sunlight on hot summer days, and keep them in a cool room to avoid heatstroke and breathing problems.

Farming and trade

No matter what kind of dog you want to buy, you should always make sure that the breeder is reputable. A common question for prospective dog owners is how much to expect to pay. A Shih Tzu puppy can cost anywhere from 10,000 to 25,000 NOK.

To make sure you are not contributing to uncontrolled or illegal dog trade, it is important to choose a seller where you get good information about how the puppy was bred. Unfortunately, not everyone breeds in a responsible or correct way. This can also lead to serious illness in the dogs. Good preparation is smart to find a reliable breeder, so that you and your dog can have a long and happy life together.
