Worth knowing before buying a rabbit
Rabbits are social animals and do best when kept in pairs or groups. We recommend choosing females if you are planning to keep two rabbits together, as they usually get along well when raised together. Males cannot be kept together. If you want to get two rabbits from the start, you should choose females and give them time to grow up together. You can also choose a neutered male and introduce a young female after a month to form a happy pair.
What does a rabbit need?
Feed your rabbit a balanced diet that includes hay, fresh vegetables and a quality pellet mix. Avoid giving too much fruit due to its sugar content. Also make sure your rabbit has access to fresh water at all times, preferably via a water bottle.
Give your rabbit a cage that is spacious enough for it to stretch out, jump and move around. You may also want to provide a soft sleeping area and a sheltered area where it can retreat a little.
Rabbits enjoy toys that stimulate their natural behavior, such as chew toys, running wheels, and objects to dig in. Rabbits also have a natural need to gnaw to maintain their teeth. Coarse hay, fruit branches, and chew sticks are good choices to provide resistance and prevent overgrown teeth that can lead to pain and reduced food intake.
What does the rabbit eat: different types of rabbit food
As mentioned, it is important to ensure that the rabbit gets what it needs through food. The rabbit's diet should primarily consist of 80-90% hay and quality grass. In addition to hay, the rabbit can be served various leafy vegetables, such as fruit trees, grass, dandelions, coarse salads, fresh herbs, as well as small amounts of broccoli, spinach, cabbage. This is a nice variation in the diet for extra nutrition, but make sure that the serving is moderate.
Pellets are a great alternative to mixed feed. Here, all the pellets taste the same, so you avoid your rabbit only eating what it likes best. Then it risks missing out on important nutrients. Follow the serving recommendation on the packaging to avoid overfeeding. For example, one tablespoon of pellets per 2 kg rabbit, especially in the winter months or during pregnancy/breastfeeding.
How to choose the right rabbit cage?
To give your rabbit enough space in the cage, we recommend a cage with dimensions of 120x50 cm or larger. The cage should be at least 0.5 m² (100 x 50 x 50 cm) for small rabbits and 0.7 m² (120 x 60 x 60 cm) for rabbits weighing 3-5 kg. The minimum allowed cage height is 50 cm.
If you want to keep rabbits outside, there are a few things to consider. Make sure to provide your rabbit with a sturdy shelf to jump on, a house to hide in, and straw or bedding for extra comfort. Outdoor cages should be made of sturdy wood.
Bottom material for rabbit cages
We recommend natural bedding material, such as paper, with high absorbency. This and regular cleaning of the cage. It is advisable to place a litter box with sand or litter for easy cleaning. Feces, wet litter and other damp things should be removed daily, the entire cage should be emptied of litter and cleaned thoroughly at least once a week.
